Hi! How are you? If you’re here, you’re clearly interested in who I am, so allow myself to introduce … myself.
My name is Nathan Hawkes. I’m 36 and I’m a WordPress developer. I’ve been coding since 2002, coding professionally since 2006, and I’ve been working with WordPress since 2007. It’s one of my favourite systems, and I probably use it on more sites than I should. Not even sorry, it’s an awesome system.
I am a certified digital marketer with the HubSpot Marketing Academy and the Google Digital Garage I am experienced in digital marketing strategy and practices, including search engine optimisation, website analytics, and content management systems. I’m qualified in digital media production with a Diploma in Digital Media, and I’m a qualified teacher (PTLLS Level 3, y’all). I’ve designed courses in subjects from Internet Basics and Using WordPress as a CMS, to Content Writing and Online Marketing. My first job was as a Learning Support Tutor for the same college I studied at, so education is definitely in my blood. I am the Creative Director and Founder of Cocode Designs, a collective of freelance developers from across the UK. The purpose of Cocode Designs is to provide a safe environment for freelancers to be able to practice their trade while allowing them to work on their own terms.
I’ve been working with WordPress for a long time, and I love using it as a system. My first WordPress site was with the SEVA Partnership, under the NHS “Delivering Race Equality” initiative. I was responsible for designing their printed books on Mental Health within ethnic minority communities, and I even had some additional books published in the series after the funding stopped (thanks to funding from other sources). The partnership was led by Wai Yin Society, a charity that is younger than I am by only three years! I’ve been involved with them since 2005, and they have a very special place in my heart. Since then, I have worked largely within the non-profit and charity sector, but I have also worked with new start-ups and small enterprises, including the redevelopment of Re-flective’s website in 2018, and the development of branding strategies for new start-ups.
I’m really embracing my nerdy side, too. I love Firefly and Serenity (#ImALeafOnTheWind), and I love Star Wars, although I only saw it in 2015. I smegging LOVE Red Dwarf, and I got to meet Robert Llewellyn at a book signing. He plays the neurotic cleaning mechanoid Kryten. My favourite thing to watch is Critical Role, where a bunch of nerdy-assed voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons. I love Laura Bailey, and adore her player character for Campaign 2, Jester Lavorre (#LetChaosReign). I prefer coffee over tea, chocolate over coffee, and lemon tea over all of them. I’m also that monster who likes pineapple on their pizza. Fight me. I like to write stories, and I’ve dabbled in a few genres, but I’m not published in any paid sense. I’m in the process of copying some of my pieces of fanfiction to this site so that I can share them with others, so look out for posts in my blog about new stories.
